Santana’s “Shaman” (Arista) debuts at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 this week, ousting Faith Hill’s “Cry” (Warner Bros.) after only one week in the top spot. For the Carlos Santana-led band, the feat marks the first time in its more than three decade-long career that one of its albums debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s album chart, while the nearly 299,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan, is its highest first week sales total.
“Shaman” is the follow up to 1999’s smash “Supernatural,” which has sold 11 million copies in the U.S., and 25 million worldwide, according to the label. Like its predecessor, the new album features a host of collaborators, including Michelle Branch, Seal, Dido, Macy Gray, P.O.D., Citizen Cope, Musiq, Chad Kroeger, Ozomatli, and Placido Domingo.
Thanks to Santana, and a 58% sales decline to 195,000 copies, Hill’s “Cry” falls to No. 2 in its second week on The Billboard 200. Behind her, new entries from the Foo Fighters and Rod Stewart further shake up the top-5 on the chart.
The Foo Fighters’ “One by One” (RCA) bow at No. 3 on first week sales of 121,500 copies, while Stewart sees “It Had To Be You… The Great American Songbook” (J Records) debut at No. 4 on the strength of nearly 115,000 copies sold. For the Foos, it’s a nice improvement on the No. 10 entry of 1999’s “There Is Nothing Left To Lose,” and for Stewart, it easily trumps the No. 50 entry of last year’s “Human” (Atlantic).
Sales of former No. 1 “ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits” (RCA) slid 27% to 104,700 copies, which drop Elvis Presley from No. 3 to No. 5 on the new chart. The Dixie Chicks, meanwhile, hold steady at No. 6 with “Home” (Monument/Columbia), and rapper Eminem stays put at No. 7 with “The Eminem Show” (Web/Aftermath/Interscope), now in its 23rd week on the chart.
Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go” (Arista) takes a three-rung drop to No. 8, followed by the Rolling Stones compilation “Forty Licks” (ABKCO/Virgin) which drops five places to No. 9. Rounding out the top-10 The Billboard 200 is Nelly’s “Nellyville” (Fo’ Reel/Universal), which falls two places to No. 10.
The top-15 welcomes three new entries: “Simply Deep,” the Columbia solo debut from Destiny’s Child’s Kelly Rowland, at No. 12; Michael W. Smith’s “Worship Again” (Reunion) at No. 14; and 3LW’s “A Girl Can Mack” (Nine Lives/Epic) at No. 15. Other debuts include Field Mob’s “From Tha Roota To Tha Toota” (MCA) at No. 33, Scarface’s “Greatest Hits” (Virgin) at No. 40, and Kenny G’s “Wishes” (Arista) at No. 64.
