Just a few moments after Sam Smith finished out his massive Grammy night with wins for record and song of the year, a clearly overwhelmed Smith — arms full of statues — greeted reporters in the press room.
“I feel like Kate Winslet at the Oscars right now!” he exclaimed. “…I don’t know how to react. It’s a dream come true. I’m the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
“I’m going to carry on with my year performing, but this is truly the highlight of my life,” he continued. “If you told me I would be standing here right now even five or six months ago, I wouldn’t know. That’s the beauty of it.”
Afte noting that he already was “working in concepts” for his next album, but declining to give more specifics, Smith took a moment to mention another Brit he’s often mentioned in the same breath with: Adele. “To be compared to the biggest singer in the world is an amazing thing,” he said. “We’re very different, but one similarity [we have] is the honesty in our music.”
And the fact people have latched on to his honest lyrics? He joked it must mean “everyone has had a lot of one-night stands!”
On a more serious love-related note, Smith noted that he still good friends with that infamous ex, and he’s “pretty sure he’s happy for me.”
As for what the night’s big winner is looking for in a new boyfriend? “Someone who could clean these every day for me!” he cracked, gesturing to his massive awards haul.
