Sam Smith is the undisputed maestro of feels in his new deep cut, “Drowning Shadows.”
The British belter made a pit stop at Zane Lowe’s Beats 1 Radio show on Monday (Nov. 2), premiering the “dark” ballad that he says was written before his breakout hit “Stay With Me.”

As if a Smith ballad needed an intro, he described the special piece as “the saddest song I’ve ever written and probably the least radio-friendly song I’ve ever written.”
Luckily, Smith settled with this final draft. “Something didn’t work,” he explained. “I thought of it recently when we were thinking about the repackage, and we went in and just did it with piano.”
The taxi ride-inspired track will appear on the deluxe edition of his 2014 debut In The Lonely Hour, available Nov. 6.
