It looks like Sam Smith will be out of commission for nearly two months.
On Instagram Thursday morning, he regretfully announced to his 3.7 million followers that he will undergo vocal surgery that will render him unable to serenade audiences for 6-8 weeks. It has been 10 days since the British songbird canceled his Australian tour dates on account of a vocal hemorrhage, for which his doctors prescribed complete vocal rest in hopes of an expedited recovery.
Smith naturally expressed that he is “getting really nervous” for the surgery, but is confident that it will allow him to “sing like never before.” He also noted that he is “dreading the next month,” as he’ll be completely banned from speaking a word.
Smith’s official web page has listed his shows in Japan, the Philippines, France, and Monaco as canceled, scheduling his return for June 3 in the U.K.
