Australian trio RÜFÜS DU SOL are one of the buzziest things on the dance floor in 2018. The hype for their third album Solace is so real, they’ve already sold out three nights at Los Angeles’ Shrine Expo Hall and three nights at New York City’s famed Terminal 5 in November.
The album’s lead single “No Place” is catchy and dramatic, having peaked at No. 31 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart in June, but if you thought the band was infectiously soulful and eerie then, you’re going to lose sleep over its latest.
“Underwater” sounds like its title. It opens with blinking, repetitive synth, murky as if coming through depths of blue. A chorus of ghostly voices lures you deeper as singer Tyrone Lindqvist whispers you to move further away. You can’t, of course. You’re completely trapped by RÜFÜS’ dark magic. If you like a little creepiness with your cool, dig that flatline beat at the end.
Solace is promised in full this fall, but there isn’t a specific date on the books just yet.
