Sun Microsystems released a new digital rights management initiative called Open Media Commons, an open-source community project created to develop a royalty-free DRM standard.
The company has made available all it’s technology development documentation for the project under an open-source license and is inviting others to contribute further.
“The issue at hand is fair compensation without the loss of fair use,” said Sun President and COO Jonathan Schwartz in a statement. “The Open Media Commons is committed to creating an open network growth engine, all the while continuing to protect intellectual property in a manner that respects customer privacy, honors honest uses of media, and encourages participation and innovation.”
