Rose McGowan has called out the music industry for “protecting predators” and broken her silence on the under-fire shock-rock veteran Marilyn Manson.
In a social post, the Scream actress praises Evan Rachel Wood and other victims of abuse who break their silence. And for the first time, she addresses the behavior of Manson (real name Brian Warner), the goth-metal icon she dated from 1997 to 2001 and was briefly engaged to.
Earlier this week, Wood called out Manson by name, for “horrifically” abusing her for years starting when she was a teenager.
Other women have since come forward and identified the rocker as their abuser. Loma Vista Recordings and CAA promptly cut ties with the artist and California’s Sen. Susan Rubio is calling on the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the allegations.
McGowan, a vocal advocate for women’s rights, says she wasn’t abused by her ex, but she believes the alleged victims’ statements.
“When he was with me, he was not like that, but that has no bearing on whether he was like that with others before or after,” she says in a video posted online. “It takes time to come forward. And again, I am proud. Proud of these women and anybody who stands against an abuser.”
McGowan, one of the most outspoken critics of sexual assault in Hollywood, shares out the blame with the artist’s labels, PR team, agents lawyers and myriad reps, whom she calls “accomplices.”
The Cult of Hollywood, fame & the music industry must be stopped from protecting predators and selling their sickness to the world. Their sickness has a farther reach than a nuclear bomb. When those at the top help monsters for profit they hurt us all. pic.twitter.com/udhxygWhSy

Later Monday, Manson posted to Instagram denying Wood’s claims, calling them “horrible distortions of reality.”
