Lady Gaga, the Rolling Stones, Eminem and dozens of other popular musicians are supporting Save the Children’s social networking campaign, “I’m Gonna Be Your Friend” to provide food, water and medicine to East African nations in the midst of devastating food crisis.
The campaign, which launched August 11, encourages social media users to promote the re-release of Bob Marley’s 1973 song High or Low Tide – which was chosen by the Marley family for its lyrics, which include “I’m Gonna Be Your Friend
“No child should be denied food or water,” Bob Marley’s widow, Rita, said. “Not one child should suffer. Along with Save the Chlldren, we must stand up together as friends to put a stop to this, to feed our children and to save their lives.”
The song accompanies a short film, helmed by Last King of Scotland director Kevin MacDonald, that chronicles the crisis in East Africa. The video has over a million views on YouTube.
More than 150 stars have used the official Twitter hashtag for the campaign, #beafriend, so far including Jay Z, Coldplay, U2, Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Jennifer Lopez, Muse, Elton John, Black Eye Peas, Britney Spears, Bruno Mars, Robert Plant, Kanye West, Madonna, Gwen Stefani, Ricky Martin, Brian May, Sting and Rihanna.
Combined, the celebrities backing the campaign have nearly 900 million fans and followers and their social media networks.
