Former pitcher Roger Clemens has spoken up on the death of country singer Mindy McCready, who claimed to have had a decade-long affair with the Red Sox and Yankees great.
“Yes, that is sad news,” he said in a written statement to reporters at a Houston Astros training event Monday morning. “I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life.”
He added, “The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent they were extremely nice.”
In April of 2008, the New York Daily News reported that McCready had been in a long-term relationship with Clemens beginning in 1991, when she was just 15 or 16. Though he denied they were anything more than friends, she later told Inside Edition that their relationship had lasted for more than a decade but only became sexual after she turned 18.
The scandal inspired a bizarrely marketed sex tape called “Baseball Mistress” starring McCready and a man named “Peter.” Aside from being a homemade sex tape, the video also included her graphic take on the “affair that rocked baseball.”
