Artists like the Academy Is…, Jack’s Mannequin and American Hi-Fi have contributed songs to “Sound of Superman,” due May 23 via Rhino. An homage to the Man of Steel, the compilation features covers of the Clique-penned, R.E.M.-popularized “Superman” (The Academy Is…), Donovan’s “Sunshine Superman” (the Films) and Foo Fighters’ “My Hero” (Paramore).
Jack’s Mannequin and up-and-comers Plain White T’s and Maxeen contributed original tracks to the effort, which will also feature songs by as-yet-unannounced artists. The Receiving End Of Sirens will put their own twist on Stereophonics’ “Superman” while Nightmare Of You recasts the Flaming Lips’ “Waitin’ for a Superman.” The first single, Maxeen’s “Save Me,” is now available through iTunes.
“Sound of Superman” arrives ahead of the June 30 theatrical release of “Superman Returns,” the first new film in the franchise since 1987’s “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.”
