Robin Thicke racks a fifth week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with “Blurred Lines,” featuring T.I. and Pharrell. The sultry song concurrently climbs to No. 1 on the Hot 100 Airplay and On-Demand Songs charts and logs a noteworthy sales feat. Meanwhile, Anna Kendrick’s “Pitch Perfect” soundtrack hit “Cups” reaches the Hot 100’s top 10 in its 28th week on the chart.
“Lines” spends a sixth week at No. 1 on the Hot Digital Songs chart, selling 423,000 downloads (down less than 1%) in the Nielsen SoundScan tracking week. Having also sold 423,000 last week and 424,000 the frame before, “Lines” is just the second song to sell at least 400,000 downloads in three tracking weeks. It joins Gotye’s “Somebody That I Used to Know,” featuring Kimbra (the top Hot 100 hit of 2012), which reached the mark on the charts dated April 28, May 5 and May 12 last year.
The strong sales for “Lines,” which passes 2 million sold to date (2.4 million), are reflecting the song’s multi-chart domination, as “Lines” crowns two additional Hot 100 component charts. It jumps 2-1 on Hot 100 Airplay with an 11% increase to 156 million all-format audience impressions, according to Nielsen BDS, good for top Airplay Gainer honors on the Hot 100 for a sixth straight week. (As previously reported, “Lines” leaps 4-1 on the Mainstream Top 40 radio airplay chart this week.) The track also lifts 2-1 on the subscription services-based On-Demand Songs chart (1.9 million, down 4%, according to BDS).
“Lines” holds at No. 3 on Streaming Songs with 5.9 million U.S. streams (up 11%) and notches a fifth week at No. 1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and an eighth week atop R&B Songs.
“Lines” widens its lead on the Hot 100 over Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” (also featuring Pharrell), which ranks at No. 2 for a fourth week. As “Lines” gains by 5% in overall chart points and “Lucky” loses 3% of its sum, “Lines” boasts a 70% lead in chart points (after leading by 56% last week).
“Lucky” slips to No. 2 after six weeks atop On-Demand Songs (1.6 million, down 22%) and is a non-mover at No. 3 on Hot 100 Airplay (129 million, up 5); No. 4 on Streaming Songs (4.3 million, down 13%); and No. 5 on Hot Digital Songs (179,000, down 5%).
“Lucky” leads Dance/Electronic Songs for an eighth week, tying the mark for the longest reign since the chart premiered in January. Baauer’s “Harlem Shake” topped the list for eight weeks in March/April.
Miley Cyrus’ “We Can’t Stop” remains bulleted at No. 3 on the Hot 100. It ranks at No. 1 on Streaming Songs for a third week (7.8 million, down 2%); logs a second week at its No. 2 peak on Hot Digital Songs (210,000, up 1%); and advances 62-49 on Radio Songs (26 million, up 34%), fueled by a 24-20 climb on Mainstream Top 40.
Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” stays at No. 4 on the Hot 100, while topping Hot Rock Songs for a 16th week. The song continues to scale Hot 100 Airplay, rising 5-4 and passing 100 million in weekly audience for the first time (104 million, up 8%).
Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise,” featuring Nelly (6-5), which rules Hot Country Songs for a 19th week, switches places on the Hot 100 with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ “Can’t Hold Us,” featuring Ray Dalton (5-6, after spending five weeks at No. 1; it tops Rap Songs for a 12th week).
Nos. 7-9 on the Hot 100, like the chart’s top four titles, remain in place from last week: Justin Timberlake’s “Mirrors” (No. 7; it descends 1-2 after seven weeks in charge of Hot 100 Airplay); Bruno Mars’ “Treasure” (No. 8; up 10-8 on Hot 100 Airplay (78 million, up 8%); and Selena Gomez’s “Come & Get It” (No. 9, after reaching No. 6).
Anna Kendrick claims the Hot 100’s lone new top 10 entry, as “Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)” rises 13-10 in its 28th week on the chart. The ascent is the fourth-longest to the top 10 for a woman in the Hot 100’s nearly 55-year history, bested only by Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” the all-time steadiest climber among all acts (38 weeks, 2007), and Faith Hill’s “This Kiss” (30, 1998) and “The Way You Love Me” (29, 2000). While Underwood and Hill reached the top 10 by seeing their songs start at country before scoring pop and adult radio airplay, the pure-pop “Cups” has made its journey via a slow build of increasing sales and, in the spring, pop and adult airplay acceptance after Republic Records released a version of it featuring fuller instrumentation than on the almost all-a capella version featured in “Pitch Perfect” and on the film’s soundtrack.
“Cups” climbs 10-8 on Hot Digital Songs with a 12% gain to 117,000 downloads sold, its best sales week. (It’s sold 1.4 million since its release.) It bullets for a second week at No. 13 on Streaming Songs (2.8 million, up 8%) and charges 24-19 on Hot 100 Airplay (51 million, up 12%). The track claims its first top 10 placement on an airplay chart, as it bumps 11-9 on Adult Top 40.
The song’s latest chart fortunes have surely been aided by the cable premiere of “Pitch Perfect” on HBO (June 22). The film has grossed $113 million worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. “Anyone that has a preteen knows (‘Cups’),” Republic senior VP/radio and video promotion David Nathan told Billboard.com in March, as the label was beginning its radio push on the song. “‘Pitch Perfect’ is a cultural phenomenon and we’re very happy to be a part of it.”
