Welcome back to Billboard.com’s “Rock the Look” series, where celebrity makeup artists re-create their clients’ most iconic, current and coveted looks on a Billboard editor.
This week, Kathy Jeung, who’s worked with Rita Ora (among many other artists) for six years shows us how to get Rita’s red-carpet smoky eyes. Check out the makeup tutorial, done on one of our Billboard editors, above, and keep reading below to get tips, tricks and product recommendations straight from the professional herself.
Kathy first started with the eyes and eyebrows, so when eye shadow fell or eyeliner smudged, she could clean it up without having to redo concealer and foundation. For bold brows, Kathy brushed them up and out, according to the growth pattern, with a translucent powder to mattify, then filled in spots between hairs with Marc Jacobs Brow Wow Defining Pencil in “Medium Brown 6” and sprayed a mascara wand with DermOrganic Fast Dry Shaping Spray, brushing it through for hold.
For the base of the smoky eye, she brushed “Matte Nude” from Marc Jacobs’ Style Eye-Con Plush Eyeshadow palette in The Lolita all over the lid and inside the crease the define. Then, using the applicator directly, she smudged Marc Jacobs Twinkle Pop Eyeshadow Stick in “Stardust” on the lid, going back in with a small eyeliner brush held horizontally (this part is key–Kathy uses brushes based on the size of the line she wants so each stroke is precise) and drawing the same Eyeshadow Stick in “Shoshanna” along the upper and lower lashlines. She then lined the both upper and lower lashines and waterlines (inside rims) of the eyes with Marc Jacobs Highligher Gel Eye Crayon in “Blaquer”, finishing with loads of Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Black and topping the look off with Velour Silk Lashes in “Momma Knows Best”.
For the face, Kathy prepped the skin with a mix of two Tom Ford Complexion Enhancing Primers in “Pink Glow” and “Peach Glow” and used a damp Beauty Blender to apply a mix of EX1 Invisiwear Liquid Foundation in “3.5” and “4.0” to the whole face and neck. She then pressed Tom Ford Correcting Pen in “Medium” under the eyes to mask dark circles and EX1 Delete Concealer in “D100” on small blemishes and imperfections, tapping EX1 Blusher in “Natural Flush” on the apples of the cheeks and on the browbone to lift the eye. She set the look with a dusting of bronzer from Marc Jacobs #Instamarc Light-Filtering Contour Powder in “Mirage”, and used the same bronzer to contour the cheekbones and under the jawline with The Shape Contouring Brush. To complete the whole look, Kathy lined the lips with Rimmel London Lip Liner in “Tiramisu” and layered Rimmel London Provocalips liquid lipstick in “Wish Upon a Berry” on top.
