The 2016 Summer Olympics kicked off in Rio de Janeiro on Friday (Aug. 5) with a carnival-esque opening ceremony.
Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen walked the runway to the immortal bossa nova jazz classic “The Girl From Ipanema,” even dancing a bit toward the end. Samba legend Paulinho da Viola sang a stripped-down version of the Brazilian National Anthem.
Michael Phelps hoisted the American flag during the Parade of Nations, and shirtless, oiled-up taekwondo competitor Pita Taufatofua carried the Tongan flag, causing the Internet to explode.

And, of course, the opening ceremony featured a visually stunning run through Brazil’s history, with the proceedings acknowledging the country’s history with slavery and including dancers whose movements brought to mind the waters of the Amazon.
