Riley Green has spoken out about his tweet that received backlash about the first all-Latin Super Bowl halftime show, featuring performances — many in Spanish — by Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, J Balvin and Bad Bunny. In his tweet on Sunday, the country singer asked for someone to “translate” the halftime show.
“Great game… but can I get somebody to translate this Super Bowl halftime show so I know what they are singing about??” he wrote to his tens of thousands of followers.
In a message posted to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 4), the “I Wish Grandpas Never Died” singer clarified his response, saying he “meant nothing negative about anyone.”
“To my fans and those who know me THANK YOU for the support,” he writes. “To anyone offended by my tweet saying I wanted to know what Shakira was singing about….I’m a country songwriter and I listen for the story. I said and meant nothing negative about anyone. Both are very talented women.”
While Green received backlash from fellow country artist Mickey Guyton and others, responses to his latest tweet include an outpouring of support. “I miss a world where you didn’t have to send this tweet to all the sensitive people that may have caused u backlash,” one fan comments.
Another fan writes, “People will literally find ANYTHING to get offended about these days. Don’t stress! It shows their character, not yours.”
“I hate that you even had to write this tweet. People are way too sensitive. Keep being you Riley, don’t let anyone take that from you!” another user adds.
