Rihanna’s “SOS” leaps 33 rungs to seize the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. The cut ends the five-week run of Daniel Powter’s “Bad Day,” which falls to No. 2. “SOS” also rises 7-1 on the Pop 100 and debuts atop the Hot Digital Songs chart, consigning the Powter track to No. 2 on both tallies.
Rihanna’s giant Hot 100 leap was fueled by Def Jam finally making “SOS” available for purchase at digital download retailers. Much like labelmate Ne-Yo’s chart-topping “So Sick,” the song was withheld until its accompanying album hit stores.
Rihanna also has the Hot 100’s top debut this week, as “Unfaithful” lands at No. 51. Elsewhere, “Bad Day” replaces James Blunt’s “You’re Beautiful” atop the Adult Contemporary chart, where Blunt falls to No. 2 after three weeks.
On the Hot 100, Sean Paul’s “Temperature” drops 2-3, Chamillionaire’s “Ridin'” featuring Krayzie Bone holds at No. 4 and T.I.’s “What You Know” descends 3-5. Nick Lachey’s “What’s Left of Me” rockets 33-6 and is the chart’s greatest sales gainer. His album of the same name arrives Tuesday (May 9) via Jive.
Bubba Sparxxx’ “Ms. New Booty” featuring Ying Yang Twins and Mr. ColliPark ascends 9-7, as Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” falls 5-8. The Sparxxx track also holds atop the Hot Ringtones chart for a fifth week.
Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dani California” jumps 10-9 on the Hot 100 and leads the Modern Rock tally for a fourth week. The cut also reclaims the top spot on the Mainstream Rock chart, sending Godsmack’s “Speak” to No. 2. “You’re Beautiful” falls 8-10 to round out the Hot 100’s top tier.
Chris Brown’s “Gimme That” featuring Lil’ Wayne is the Hot 100’s greatest airplay gainer for a second week and enjoys a 42-25 bump. Tracks new to the Hot 100 are Phil Vassar’s “Last Day of My Life” (No. 94) and AFI’s “Miss Murder” (No. 97).
Bon Jovi’s duet with Jennifer Nettles, “Who Says You Can’t Go Home,” remains atop the Hot Country Songs chart for a second week, while Anais’ “Lo Que Son Las Cosas” leads the Hot Latin Songs chart for a fifth.
