The Billboard Hot 100:
As previously reported, Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger,” featuring Christina Aguilera, rolls to the top of the Billboard Hot 100, jumping 4-1 with Greatest Gainer/Airplay honors for a third consecutive week. Let’s spend (some time) together looking at other notable gainers and droppers on this week’s chart:
— Rihanna: Traversing familiar sonic territory (i.e., beats) following the No. 37-peaking ballad “California King Bed” has proven a good move for Rihanna. On the doorstep of the Hot 100’s top 10 (17-11) in just its fifth chart week, “Cheers (Drink to That)” claims Greatest Gainer/Digital accolades. The cut bounds 15-5 on Hot Digital Songs (131,000 downloads sold, up 68%, according to Nielsen SoundScan), while lifting 19-17 on Hot 100 Airplay (52 million in all-format audience, up 13%, according to Nielsen BDS).
— Lil Wayne: After bowing last week at No. 3, “She Will,” featuring Drake, tumbles to No. 17, plunging 1-7 on Hot Digital Songs (112,000, down 56%). Radio support is building, however, as the collaboration ascends 71-55 in its second frame on Hot 100 Airplay (23 million, up 37%). The rapper/singer’s takeover of the Billboard Top 200 with “Tha Carter IV” is just a week away.
— Lady Gaga, Adele: Two titles that leap into the top 20 will likely sport further gains next week following the artists’ buzz-generating appearances on Sunday’s (Aug. 28) MTV Video Music Awards. Lady Gaga’s “You and I” charges 35-16, up 92% in digital sales (to 109,000) and 50% in airplay (to 32 million), and Adele’s “Someone Like You” soars 34-19 with gains in sales (95,000 downloads, up 68%) and radio play (29 million, up 41%).
— Jason Derulo: Although it’s slipped in the two weeks since its arrival at No. 39 (to No. 65 last week and No. 73 this week), “It Girl,” the follow-up to the No. 14-peaking “Don’t Wanna Go Home” is just beginning its radio life. The acoustic pop shuffler bows on Mainstream Top 40 at No. 34 and improves by 84% to 11 million in all-format radio audience.
— Lady Antebellum: Similarly, don’t fret over the 47-86 drop for the trio’s “We Owned the Night.” After its lofty launch (No. 22) on Hot Digital Songs last week, it departs the digital tally this week, down 71% in sales to 17,000. The second single from Lady A’s third album, “Own the Night,” due Sept. 13, zips 40-27 on Hot Country Songs, however, and will likely rebound up the Hot 100 as airplay at the band’s home format increases.
The Billboard 200:
Rapper Game saw “R.E.D.” at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 this week as his new album started atop the tally with 98,000. Three more new albums started in the top 10, including a stunning 31st top 10 effort for diva Barbra Streisand. Elsewhere on the tally, there were a number of intriguing movers and shakers:
— While the “MTV Video Music Awards” aired late on Sunday (Aug. 28) night — the final day of the SoundScan tracking week — the Billboard 200 sees some impact from consumers’ fast reaction that night. Performer Adele sees her “21” slips a rung to No. 3, though it gains by 3%. Best new artist winner Tyler, the Creator re-enters at No. 102 with his “Goblin” (up 77%) and Young the Giant (the show’s only performing rock act) debuts at No. 130 with its self titled set (up 141%). The latter has been out since last October and has notched 34 frames on Heatseekers Albums (vaulting 15-2 this week). Watch for bigger VMA-related moves next week, after a full seven days of post-show sales have been registered.
— “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” Soundtrack: The album was reissued in deluxe form last week, which spurs its re-entry at No. 109 (4,000; up 332%). The revamped set came with a bonus disc of extra content (titled “Bona Fide Rarities and Unreleased Tracks”), which was also available as a stand-alone product exclusively at Wal-Mart. The bonus material set debuts at No. 3 on Bluegrass Albums with 1,000 sold
— Rihanna: As her “Cheers (Drink to That)” single continues to power up the Billboard Hot 100 (see above), its parent album “Loud” is finding its way to higher ground on the Billboard 200 too. This week it jumps 38-20 with Greatest Gainer honors (indicating the chart’s largest unit gain) with 15,000 sold (up 48%). This week also marks “Loud’s” highest chart position and best sales week since the tally dated May 14, when it was No. 14 (22,000).
— “Country Strong,” MercyMe: Continued premium cable play for the Gwyneth Paltrow film spurs gains for both the soundtrack (No. 46, up 94%) and its sequel set (No. 119, up 79%). Meanwhile, a $5 sale price at Family Christian boosts MercyMe’s “The Generous Mr. Lovewell” album by 278% — enabling its re-entry at No. 74.
— Kings of Leon, Fleetwood Mac, more: The iTunes Store’s back to school sale — where selected albums are sale priced at $7.99 engineers gains for a number of charting sets this week. Among the gainers: Kings of Leon’s “Come Around Sundown” returns at No. 144 (up 52%), Nickelback’s “Dark Horse” gallops 198-153 (up 9%), Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” re-enters at No. 155 (up 48%).
