Rihanna just scored her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200, as seventh full-length “Unapologetic” debuts in the top spot with 238,000 copies sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. But long before this week and this album, Rihanna was reigning supreme on another Billboard chart: the Hot 100.

“Diamonds” remains at No. 1 on this week’s tally, spending its second week in the penthouse after becoming her 12th Hot 100 topper one week ago. With a dozen No. 1 singles, Rihanna has tied Madonna and the Supremes for the fourth-most Hot 100 leaders in the chart’s 54-year history, and is now only behind the Beatles (20), Mariah Carey (18) and Michael Jackson (13) for the most No. 1s of all time.
The success of Rihanna’s singles is even more staggering because of their diversity: who else could ride a ballad like “Take a Bow,” a hip-hop anthem like “Live Your Life” with T.I. and a propulsive dance floor burner like “We Found Love” featuring Calvin Harris to the top spot with such ease? Rihanna has delivered seven years’ worth of indelible smashes, that have spent a total of 46 weeks (!) atop the Hot 100. Only one question remains: out of Rihanna’s 12 No. 1s, which song is the best?

With “Diamonds” remaining at No. 1 on this week’s Hot 100, Rihanna has now notched eight songs that have spent multiple weeks in the top spot of the tally. Rihanna is also the fastest female artist to reach 12 No. 1 singles: her six-year, seven-month span between 2006’s “SOS” and “Diamonds” passes Carey’s seven-year, one-month, two-week stretch between her first and 12th toppers.
