Rihanna’s single “Don’t Stop The Music” has created a chart first Down Under. It becomes the first digital-only single to go to No. 1 on the official Motorola ARIA Singles Chart, published on Sunday night (Feb. 17).
The Australian Recording Industry Association began incorporating digital works into the singles chart from October 2007. Downloads make up about 70% of the chart, estimate label sources.
It the Def Jam artist’s third Australian chart topping single. “SOS” was No. 1 for eight weeks from April 2006, and “Umbrella” held the top spot for seven weeks from June 2007. According to ARIA, she now has equal fourth placing with Shakira and Pink as the female artist with the most No. 1 singles this decade.
“Don’t Stop the Music” will be released on physical format stores on Feb. 25, according to Universal Music Australia. The singer’s current album “Good Girl Gone Bad” has sold more than 100,000 units in this territory, says the label. In Australia, 70,000 album unit sales denotes platinum certification.
