After Rihanna’s “Pour It Up” music video offered twerking, pole-dancing and general skin-showing, the pop superstar dials it down for the “What Now” music video, which was released on Friday (Nov. 15) and includes some exceptionally vulnerable shots of the 25-year-old singer.
There’s no narrative concept in the “What Now” clip — instead, Rihanna’s expressions and emoting grow more intense as she writhes around an empty white room in a tasteful gray dress. As the song reaches its crescendo, her face is paired with black-and-white shots of swimming fish, chain links, deserted hallways and attacking lions, and Rih lets her confusion envelop her to a point in which she collapses in the middle of the floor.
Rihanna’s Diamonds World Tour concludes tonight (Nov. 15) in New Orleans, capping off a long promotional trek for her 2012 album “Unapologetic.” That album, which was led by the No. 1 single “Diamonds,” has sold 1.1 million copies to date, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
While “What Now” climbs to No. 80 on this week’s Hot 100 chart, Rihanna also moves closer to another chart-topper with “The Monster,” her latest collaboration with Eminem, which moves to No. 2 in its second week on the tally.
