Officials say the man who raped and killed the ex-wife of Righteous Brothers singer Bill Medley in 1976 was shot and killed by police more than three decades ago.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said Monday (Jan. 30) that investigators blame Kenneth Eugene Troyer for the slaying. Karen Klaas was strangled with her pantyhose in her home.
McDonnell says investigators used a controversial DNA testing technique that allows investigators to search databases to identify likely relatives of suspects who may have committed the crime. A forensic sample collected at the crime scene found a familial match to identify a close male relative of Troyer’s.
Police in California killed Troyer in 1982. Authorities say he was suspected of several other sexual assaults.
Medley says he always held out hope that investigators would find his Klaas’ killer.
Klaas was sexually assaulted and strangled with pantyhose in January 1976 as she returned to her home in Hermosa Beach.
The 32-year-old died a few days later.
