Longtime Neil Young bassist Rick Rosas has passed away at age 65, according to several sources. Crazy Horse drummer Ralph Molina first posted the news on his Facebook page, followed by Neil Young’s unofficial fan page Thrasher’s Wheat. Rosas cause of death is not yet known.
Rosas recently filled in for Crazy Horse’s bassist on their 2014 European summer tour with Neil Young after Billy Talbot suffered a stroke.
Back in the late ’80s, Rosas was part of Young’s short-lived backing group the Bluenotes. Rosas continued working with Young on several latter day classics: Freedom, Living With War and Chrome Dreams II. He also played bass on the farewell tour of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young and Buffalo Springfield’s reunion tour.
Over the course of a lengthy career, Rosas also played with Joe Walsh, Etta James, Ron Wood and others. Listen to Rosas’ bass work on the immortal “Rockin’ in the Free World” below.
