Regina Specktor will hold a special in-store performance at New York indie mecca Other Music on Record Store Day, April 16 — and fittingly enough, the performance itself is limited edition.
The first 100 customers who buy Spektor’s special Record Store Day blue-vinyl release, “Four From Far,” will be admitted to the performance, which will be held at an empty space in the building that houses Other Music. “Four From Far” will contain the (formerly) digital exclusive “Riot Gear,” “The Sword & the Pen” and “Time Is All Around” from the special edition of her last studio LP “Far,” and “Eet” from “Live in London.”
The Other Music show will be recorded, and plans call for it to be released exclusively to indie stores for “Back to Black Friday,” the independent record store community’s answer to discounters who loss-lead music on Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving, when the holiday shopping season officially begins).
For Record Store day, about 1,400 indie record stores around the world will celebrate music with approximately 250 releases available exclusively at indie stores. Also, an estimated 600 artists will perform or make appearances on the weekend of April 16 at participating stores.
Artist appearances include Foo Fighters at Fingerprints in Long Beach, Calif.; Todd Rundgren at Hungry Ear Records in Kailua, Hawaii; Duran Duran at Rasputin’s in Berkeley, Calif.; and My Morning Jacket at CD Central in Lexington, Ky.
“It’s so important to have a local place where you can go and discover new and older music,” Spektor said in a statement. “It’s great to be surrounded by knowledgeable people who can guide you and help you through your discoveries; people who can put things into a context, care about the history of recorded music, and want to share their experience.”
Other Music co-owner Josh Madell said in a statement, “Record shops are all about creating a place for artists to connect with their fans, and in the most literal sense Other Music and Record Store Day 2011 are creating a great forum for Regina Spektor to connect with the great New York fans who have supported her from the start.”
Later that day, Record Store Day will go to New York’s Lincoln Center to present two movies at the Walter Reade Theater: “Regina Spektor Live in London” and “Sound It Out,” a British documentary about a record store in the northern English town of Teesside.
