-Phil Perry will replace the late Wayman Tisdale as part of Norman Brown’s Summer Storm lineup at the upcoming Playboy Jazz Festival (June 13-14; Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles). The veteran soul singer/songwriter will join guitarist Brown, saxophonist Eric Darius and pianist Gail Johnson as they perform a tribute to Tisdale. The jazz bassist and former NBA all-star died May 15 after a two-year battle with cancer.
-Tyrese protégé Stix is finishing his solo debut album, “Late for Soundcheck” (Aug. 18). Born Brandon Salaam-Bailey, the Watts, Calif. native describes his sound as “hip pop.” He is also a founding member of the rock band Life Nine, which recently signed a production deal with Tyrese’s Headquarter Entertainment. Stix’ solo debut is being distributed through his company Sum Genius in association with Khepera Records/INgrooves/Universal Records.
The project features the tracks “Shining Star” and the mid-June release “I’m Fly.”
-The Roots will join opera singer Jessye Norman, jazz singer Nnenna Freelon and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra Aug. 30 in the West Coast premiere of author/poet Langston Hughes’ “Ask Your Mama: 12 Moods for Jazz.” First presented in 1961, the revamped version of “Ask Mama”—a collaboration between Norman and Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman—features a score encompassing orchestral music, hip-hop and jazz.
