— R&B pioneer Smokey Robinson will be inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Hall of Fame on June 2. The fourth annual fund-raising gala, presented by the Apollo Theater Foundation, will also award the Ruby Dee & Ossie Davis Arts and Humanitarian Award to Pauletta and Denzel Washington. Ruby Dee, Janet Jackson and actor Terrence Howard are among the evening’s presenters. Performances by India.Arie, Earth, Wind & Fire and Nnenna Freelon are slated, with comedienne Wanda Sykes serving as host.
— Songwriter/producer Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins has produced “I Feel,” which he says will be the follow-up to Ray J’s current hit, “Sexy Can I.” Jerkins and protégé D”Mile also produced “I’m Grown,” the first single for young Columbia Records newcomer Tiffany Evans. Other projects on Jerkins’ studio calendar include the Pussycat Dolls, Beyoncé and Jamie Foxx. Jerkins, who formerly held an A&R position at Def Jam, moved his Darkchild Records under the Interscope umbrella in February of this year.
