It has been quite a year for Raury, the music industry’s favorite indigo child, who first stepped onto the scene in the spring of ’14 with the free-spirited visuals for “God’s Whisper.” Now, one mixtape and various collaborations later, Raury shows another side of his story on his new single “Devil’s Whisper.”
“You better run, run from the devil,” he repeats. Starting slowly, the ever-insightful artist sings a simplistic prose that shows without telling too much. Atop stomps, claps and the strumming of a guitar, Raury lures us in, line by line. Halfway through, the beat builds and breaks as acoustic morphs into electronic and Raury’s echoes launch into a full-fledged rap. Bar by bar, he challenges listeners with fury-infused queries.
“My heart burns in the fire of truth,” he declares, “We are hate, we are love.” With “Devil’s Whisper,” Raury paws through polarities and trivialities to seek the questions of collective truth in which his journey is grounded.
