Random Axe, the hip-hop supergroup featuring underground standouts Black Milk, Sean Price and Guilty Simpson, unveiled its self-titled debut album during a listening session at the Dominican NY Theater & Lounge in New York last night (Apr. 25). The three rappers were on hand to present “Random Axe,” the 15-track album due out June 14 on Duck Down Music, and discuss the long-in-the-works collaboration.
“Sean P. is one of those artists who’s real consistent. He’s been doing his thing for so long, and you ain’t never heard no whack s**t from P,” said Black Milk, the Detroit MC/producer who released the lauded full-length “Album of the Year” last fall. “Then you got me on the beats. I dropped a few verses, but I focused mostly on the production side.”
Guilty Simpson, another Detroit native, told the crowd that it was an “easy decision” to commit to the group when first approached about the collaboration in 2008. And Brooklyn mixtape maestro Sean Price said of Black Milk, “He can rhyme his ass off, and his beats are crazy.”
Judging from the listening, “Random Axe” will be one of the summer’s most immediate indie rap releases, with tracks like “Chewbacca,” “Understand This” and “Random Call” featuring dizzying production and hard-nosed rhymes. Check out album cut “The Hex,” which hit the web last weeK:
