Embattled R&B star R. Kelly will be able to put his troubles on the shelf for a while this summer as he hits the road for a brief set of shows. Kelly’s run of headlining shows begins Aug. 15 in Oakland, Calif., and ends Aug. 28 in Atlanta, according to his official Web site. Opening acts have not been announced.
Kelly has not been allowed to leave the Chicago area without a judge’s permission since he was indicted June 5, 2002, on charges of having sex with an underage girl. Last month he was granted permission to attend the BET Awards in Los Angeles and to take part in a Dallas charity concert for families of soldiers injured or killed in the Iraq war.
Before the August tour, Kelly has a handful of other performances scheduled. He’s headlining tomorrow (July 19) at the Aladdin Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, making a special appearance at a July 26 Chicago radio station event and performing Aug. 1 at the third annual Detroit Music Festival (DMF).
“All procedures necessary for R. Kelly to perform in Detroit on Aug. 1 have been completed and confirmed,” DMF producer Kevin Brown says in a statement, “and we are currently planning an exciting show for R. Kelly’s stage production, as well as with our other performers.” Also performing that night will be Nas and the Isley Brothers; others slated for the next day include Nelly and India.Arie.
