If you find yourself grooving to the warm up music at one of Michelle Obama‘s upcoming Becoming book tour dates, don’t be embarrassed — one of this generations’ top musical minds helped curate those tunes.
Questlove of The Roots created a soundtrack for Becoming in a three-volume playlist called The Michelle Obama Musiaqualogy, featuring songs by Sam Cooke, Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, George Benson, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D’Angelo and more.
“Like a lot of people, I connect many of my memories with the songs and melodies I was listening to at the time,” says Obama in statement to Billboard. “From the jazz and Stevie Wonder of my childhood, to Prince and Earth, Wind & Fire as I came into my own as an adult, to Beyoncé, Janelle Monáe, and so many others who provided the stirring backbeats of my time in the White House — music has always been a defining part of who I’ve become.
“That’s why I’m so thankful to Questlove for curating these playlists and infusing them with his signature style. Life’s a little better when we live it to Questlove’s beat.”
Aside from playing live in venues across 10 cities on the Becoming book tour, The Michelle Obama Musiaqualogy is streaming on Spotify and Pandora on the Questlove station.
As well, Obama has announced she will make a special appearance on Questlove’s Questlove Supreme podcast on Pandora. More details to come.
The Michelle Obama Musiaqualogy volume one spans 1964-1979, volume two covers 1980-1997 and volume three runs from 1997-2018. While the fist two volumes are meant to be played chronologically, the third should be put on shuffle mode. Listen to them below.
