ABC is launching its latest musical drama, Queens, about the public fallout of a chart-topping, 90s hip-hop group and their climb back to the top of the charts. Brandy, Eve, Naturi Naughton, and Nadine Velazquez make up the once raunchy rap quartet reimagined as Queens, looking to reclaim their past glory in a music industry that’s transformed since their dominant run at the turn of the millennium.
Last week, Billboard and VIBE partnered with ABC for a virtual premiere party to celebrate the show’s impending release. The exclusive viewing was hosted by DJ and content creator Brittany Sky, who got the party started with a medley of timeless 90s classics from Lauryn Hill to SWV.
The virtual event offered up an array of exclusive content, including a behind the scenes clip that explored the Queens’ rise to fame and an early look at the music video for their breakout hit, “Nasty Girl,” which came complete with eye-catching hoop earrings, flashy gold outfits, and a sneak-peek into Brandy’s rap alter ego, Xplicit Lyrics. Later, attendees got active from home by following along to a special hip-hop dance masterclass from the fierce ladies of Queens ‘N Lettos and their front-woman, viral celeb choreographer Aliya Janell.
After a jam-packed pre-show, it was finally time for attendees to watch the drama-filled first episode of Queens before sitting in on a spirited dialogue with the show’s cast and creators including Eve, Naturi Naughton, Nadine Velazquez, Taylor Sele, Pepi Sonuga, Brandy and executive producers Zahir McGhee and Sabrina Wind. The Q&A was hosted by VIBE’s Jazzie Bell, who led the group through a captivating conversation that touched on all things 90s hip-hop and R&B, sisterhood, and how they relate to their characters.
When asked, “What do you hope people take away from the show?” executive producer Zahir McGhee beamed, “…I want people to have a good time. I want people to feel good. I want them to identify with these women… which they will. And I just want to throw a party every single week.”
That said, make sure you’re not late to the party by tuning in to the world premiere of Queens on Tuesday, October 19th at 10 PM EST on ABC and stream on Hulu.
