Four months after first claiming it had licensing agreements signed with all four major labels, ad-supported music service Qtrax today announced the signing of its first real major label deal — with Universal Music Group. Additionally, the company also inked a deal with Universal Music Publishing Group.
Unlike the full-court media press it went on at MIDEM, where it was quickly learned that the service did not in fact have any major label deals in place, Qtrax this time, very quietly put out a press release and is not granting interviews. The release did have a quote from UMG.
This is the company’s first major label licensing deal, although it does have several publishing agreements with the likes of EMI Music Publishing and Sony/ATV, among others.
