
Bicycle Music Acquires Interest in Billie Holliday Catalog
The Bicycle Music Company has acquired a substantial interest in Billie Holiday publishing catalog as well as her master recordings, name, likeness and image rights.
As a songwriter, Billie Holiday co-wrote such standards as “Lady Sings the Blues,” and “Don’t Explain,” while as an artist, her catalog includes over 50 album titles. Bicycle Music will bring appropriate opportunities to her collective body of work, the company said. Her image has already appeared on a U.S. Post Office stamp, and Bicycle will be looking for more opportunities to keep her legacy and image as an essential part of American culture, the company said.
Universal Signs Taylor Swift Producer
Universal Music Publishing Group have signed Nathan Chapman to an exclusive, worldwide publishing agreement, the company announced. Chapman, who has produced Taylor Swift’s three albums, was signed by Ron Stuve in the the UMPG Nashville office, with Ron Stuve doing the signing.
Chapman also produced The Band Perry’s single, “All Your Life,” according to UMPG, and has two songs on the upcoming Lionel Richie album, Tuskegee, among other projects.
Downtown Inks Major Deals
Downtown Music Publishing has signed a worldwide publishing agreement with Dee-Lite and will now handle the band’s entire output including “Groove Is In The Heart,” Good Beat,” “Power of Love,” and “Runaway.”
In another deal, Downtown has signed a long-term publishing administration deal with the newly-formed Transdreamer Publishing, a publishing arm of Megaforce and MRI Entertainment. The first two artists signed to Transdreamer Publishing include singer Sara Gazarek and long-time Megaforce Records’ recording artists Anthrax.
Megaforce, the label and its distributing marketing arm, MRI, oversee releases by such artists as Metallica, Das Racist, The Black Crowes, The Verve, Willie Nelson & Asleep At the Wheel, the Saw Doctors, and Third Eye Blind, among others.
Under the terms of the agreement, Downtown will provide worldwide publishing administration, royalty collection and sync licensing services for all artists signed to Transdreamer Publishing.
Tyrese Gibson Signs With Peermusic
Peermusic has signed a publishing agreement with recording artist, actor, author and model Tyrese Gibson, and will serve as the exclusive publisher to the artist’s latest album, Pen Invitation. That album, released under the name Tyrese, has scanned 239,000 units since its release in November.
Gibson is just heading out on a nationwide tour, accoridng to the Peer announcement. In addition to his recording career, Tyrese Gibson has been featured in major motion pictures, including Transformers, Legion, Fast Five and many more. His self-help book, “How To Get Out Of Your Own Way,” made the New York Times Best Seller list.
AIMP, CCC To Host Music Industry Toolbox Conference
The Association of Independent Music Publishers (AIMP) and The California Copyright Conference (CCC) will co-host on Feburary 22 in Los Angeles the second annual Music Industry Toolbox, a business-to-business event featuring BMI, digital music marketing firms, music management software and services essential to music publishers, record labels and other sectors of the music business.
Attendees will be able to speak to representatives from BMI, as well as learn about the latest in digital music marketing; software for rights management, royalty accounting and product licensing; software for music management, including leading sound recognition companies and leaders in search, distribution, meta-tagging and cue sheet production; and services to uncover mechanical and performance royalties.

Bill Hart To Become Copyright Consultant
Bill Hart, a partner in the New York office of Proskauer Rose, is moving over to being a copyright consultant and will engage in various publishing and music pursuits in traditional and new media businesses. Besides being involved in critical copyright cases during his career, he says he has also been involed in music publihsing transactions, including ones for Bob Marley and Jimmy Webb. He also teaches copyright at Brooklyn Law School.
