After reuniting to tour last year with the Go-Go’s and the B-52s, the Psychedelic Furs are stepping out for a headlining jaunt this spring. The band also plans to record its first new studio album in a decade at the conclusion of the tour, which opens March 23 in New York and closes May 12 in Boston.
The band’s live set will consist heavily of past hits, but also will preview new songs. The Psychedelic Furs broke up after 1991’s “World Outside” failed to chart. No label has yet been lined up to distribute the forthcoming album, according to a band spokesperson.
The Psychedelic Furs formed in 1977, and were a sextet by the time the group released its self-titled debut in 1980. Only three original members remain — Richard Butler, Tim Butler, and John Ashton. The British new wave band, which attempted to meld the immediacy of the Sex Pistols with the artsy awareness of the Velvet Underground, is best known in the U.S. for its single “Pretty In Pink,” which was recorded for 1981’s “Talk Talk Talk” (Columbia).
The track became a groundbreaking hit, eventually reaching No. 41 on The Billboard Hot 100, when John Hughes used it for his 1986 film of the same name. In January, Columbia released a single-CD collection of the Furs’ greatest hits.
