Prince’s Purple Rain jacket and silk shirt combo has sold for a not-so-princely sum.
The New Romantic-style ruffled ivory shirt worn by the late artist in the ‘80s film went at auction for nearly $100,000, more than 30 times its starting price ($3,000). And the black-and-white corduroy blazer worn by Prince’s character the Kid fetched $96,000, more than 15 times its starting price ($6,000). That’s despite the jacket having minor stains on the right cuff and staining on the interior armpit.
Prince’s ‘Purple Rain’ Jacket & Shirt to Be Auctioned Off on eBay
The items went under the hammer as part of eBay’s Hollywood Auction 83, a three-day event beginning June 29. Thousands of items were up for grabs, including clothing and costumes worn by Alicia Keys, Britney Spears and Marilyn Monroe.
According to The Guardian, a treasure trove of Prince-related memorabilia sold at auction, including a pair of knee-length high-heeled boots from the 1988 Lovesexy tour ($17,920), a necklace from his “Diamonds and Pearls” music video ($8,320), and a white shirt from the Purple Rain tour ($32,000).
Prince died on April 21 at his Paisley Park home in Minnesota of an accidental overdose of fentanyl.
Just last week, the yellow Cloud electric guitar that Prince used in numerous concerts until the mid-1990s was sold at auction to Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay for $137,500.
