A kiss is just a kiss… Or is it? “Darte un Beso” (Give You a Kiss), the Prince Royce hit that spent 14 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart, gets a new life, a new name and a new language with a new Portuguese version performed by Royce and Brazilian star Michel Telo. And you get to hear it first on Billboard.
“Te Dar Um Beijo” is the new single from Telo’s new album and will likely be available here on iTunes as of April 22. The collaboration came together when Telo reached out to Royce’s camp because he wanted to record “Darte un Beso” in Portuguese. “They sent me a rough demo and I said, ‘why don’t we just do it together?'” says Royce.
The finished version is not in Royce’s Dominican bachata style, but sertanejo, the accordion-based music of Brazil. And yet, it works beautifully, the romance balanced by the lilting accordion and acoustic guitar. The track kicks off with Telo on vocals, and after the break, it’s Royce’s turn.
“I don’t speak Portuguese, but it was great to work with the coach and hear him say, ‘Yes, you’re doing great,'” laughs Royce.
Royce and Telo will likely perform the track together for the first time during the Billboard Latin Music Awards, airing live April 24 on the Telemundo network.
“For me it’s something cool for the fans to listen to and hear me with a whole other vibe and bring together different cultures,” says Royce. “It was very spontaneous.”
Meanwhile, Royce continues to work on his English-language album due out before end of the year.
“It’s a mix of Latin, pop, urban and romantic music,” says Royce. “I think people are going to be surprised. We’re definitely working on collaborations with Latin and non-Latin artists.”
