Prince’s classic double-album 1999 has been remastered for the very first time and expanded with 35 previously unreleased tracks for an upcoming Super Deluxe reissue, the Prince Estate and Warner Records announced Tuesday (Sept. 10). The new edition of the album, which will also be available in deluxe and remastered versions, is slated to hit all physical, digital and streaming partners on Nov. 29.
Released on Oct. 27, 1982, 1999 was Prince’s first true crossover success, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard 200 and featuring a raft of hit singles including “Little Red Corvette,” “Delirious” and the title track. The album’s success also catapulted the prolific singer-songwriter to fame as a music video star, making him one of the first black artists to be in heavy rotation on MTV.
The previously unheard songs were all recorded in 1981, 1982 and early 1983, when Prince was working on his own material as well as tracks he would give to protégés Vanity 6 and The Time, along with dozens more songs he would store away in a vault for possible later use.
The expansive Super Deluxe Edition of the album will feature a total of 65 audio tracks across five CDs or 10 180g vinyl records. Tracks will include 23 previously unissued studio recordings created between November 1981 and January 1983 as well as a complete live audio performance of the 1999 tour recorded at the second of two concerts Prince performed in Detroit on Nov. 30, 1982.
Both CD and vinyl editions of the Super Deluxe set will also include a brand-new DVD containing a complete, previously unreleased concert from the 1999 tour recorded in multi-cam at the Houston Summit on Dec. 29, 1982. Additionally, it will feature previously unseen handwritten lyrics from several Prince songs of the era including “Little Red Corvette,” images of the analog tape reels from the vault, rare photography from Prince’s early ’80s photographer Allen Beaulieu and brand-new liner notes by Rolling Stone critic David Fricke, Guns N’ Roses bassist Duff McKagan, Minneapolis historian and radio host Andrea Swensson and Prince scholar Duane Tudahl.
The deluxe edition will include two CDs or four 180g vinyl records and the remastered edition will feature one CD or two 180g Purple Vinyl records. All editions of the reissue will additionally include audio-only download and streaming.
