Electronic music’s favorite sad boy is back with a new bittersweet single, as Porter Robinson debuts “Get Your Wish,” the lead single from his forthcoming sophomore LP Nurture.
In the “Get Your Wish” video, a giant rogue wave sparkles blue between shots of Robinson sitting wet and forlorn. He languishes with a microphone and soon begins singing in girlish filtered tones over the fast, flowery synth melody. Rushing drums push the euphoric melody toward a bright, ballad breakdown, even as the lyrics tell a different story.
“‘Get your Wish’ is a song about finding a reason to keep going,” Robsinson explains, “even if it’s not for your own sake … I’m singing through effects that artificially make my voice much much higher. At first, I did it because it made it easier to talk about painful subjects directly, and then slowly I grew really attached to the sound of that voice. It’s me.”
The lead single fits well with the tone set by his 2014 full-length debut Worlds, even as it leans a bit heavier toward organic composition.
Nurture is set for full release later this year. Watch the official music video for “Get Your Wish” and read more about the deeply personal story behind the lyrics in Robinson’s tweet below.
