Just a few days in advance of its self-titled debut BNA album, progressive country act Pinmonkey will head out on the highway beginning tomorrow (Oct. 5), with a star-studded stop in Philadelphia. The group will be on a bill with Tim McGraw and Martina McBride at the WXTU Philly Chili Cook Off, which will also feature sets by Sixwire and Eric Heatherly.
From there, the band will appear on the public radio program “Mountain Stage” and “CMT’s Most Wanted Live” before hitting the road in earnest. It will spend the balance of the year playing a combination of dates supporting the likes of Brad Paisley and Lee Ann Womack, headlining club shows, and radio station-sponsored events.
“Pinmonkey is a really healthy blend of a lot of different music styles that needed to be blended …everything from bluegrass to jazz to roots rock, and more thrown in,” Paisley says. “I’m anxious to see what the future holds for these boys.”
Due Tuesday (Oct. 8), the 11-track “Pinmonkey” showcases the lauded musical chops of members Michael Reynolds, Rick Schell, Michael Jeffers, and Chad Jeffers. In August, the album’s lead single, “Barbed Wire and Roses,” reached No. 25 on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart. A cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “I Drove All Night” has been tapped as the second radio single. The entire album can be sampled on the band’s official Web site.
Reynolds tells Billboard in the Oct. 12, 2002, issue that, regardless of a song’s origin, “anything I sing comes out bluegrass.” Schnell, who says his wife describes the band’s music as “pop grass,” agrees: “There’s something innate in us that when we start playing something, it just comes out Pinmonkey.”
