Pink raced 37 places up the new U.K. singles chart to hit the top yesterday with “So What” (LaFace/Sony BMG). That ended Kings Of Leon’s three-week tenure at No. 1 with “Sex on Fire” (Hand Me Down/Sony BMG), but the U.S. quartet retained their leadership of the album chart for a second week with “Only by the Night.”
The Pink single debuted at No. 38 last week and soared to the summit to become her 12th top 10 U.K. hit and second No. 1, after “Just Like a Pill” achieved the feat in 2002. “Sex on Fire” dipped to No. 2, as Oasis scored a No. 3 debut with “The Shock of the Lightning” (Big Brother), the first single from its new “Dig Out Your Soul” album. Reunited boy band Boyzone arrived at No. 5 with “Love You
Anyway” (Polydor).
Basshunter’s “Angel in the Night” (Hard2beat) moved up seven spots to No. 14 and another Hard2Beat release, Manchester vocal trio Platnum’s “Love Shy,” came in at No. 20. Surprisingly, Jack White & Alicia Keys’ new James Bond theme “Another Way To Die” (J) failed to improve on last week’s No. 26 debut, holding in that position.
“Only by the Night” withstood some strong competition to keep its crown, as the album chart showed new entries from positions 2-4. British pop vocalists Will Young and James Morrison arrived at No. 2 and No. 3 with “Let It Go” (19/Sony BMG) and “Songs For You, Truths For Me” (Polydor), respectively. 14-year-old Scottish soprano Andrew Johnston came in at No. 4 with “One Voice” (Syco Music/Sony BMG). Johnston placed third on this year’s second series of the ITV show “Britain’s Got Talent.”
There was a notable No. 9 debut for American blues veteran Seasick Steve with his first Warner Bros. album, “I Started Out With Nothin’ and I Still Got Most Of It Left.” He has built a U.K. fan base with repeated touring and television appearances in the last two years.
Metallica and Katy Perry retained their leads on Billboard’s pan-European sales charts, with “Death Magnetic” (Vertigo/Universal) heading European Top 100 Albums for a third frame and “I Kissed a Girl” (Virgin/EMI) making it eight weeks atop Eurochart Hot 100 Singles.
