As Pink’s “So What” (LaFace) started a third week atop the new U.K. singles chart, Keane scored a No. 1 debut with its third album, “Perfect Symmetry” (Universal Island).
The British pop-rock trio now has a perfect hat-trick of chart-topping starts on the British bestsellers, having also arrived at No.1 with its debut, “Hopes and Fears,” in May 2004 and with the follow-up, “Under the Iron Sea” in June 2006.
“Symmetry” relegates Oasis’ “Dig Out Your Soul” (Big Brother) to one week atop the album survey. That project fell 1-2 and Kings Of Leon’s “Only By the Night” (Hand Me Down/Sony Music) dropped 2-3, as reunited boy band Boyzone debuted at No. 4 with “Back Again — No Matter What” (Polydor). Ne-Yo’s “Year of the Gentleman” (Def Jam) improved 6-5.
UMTV/Universal’s new collection by 1960s favorites the Dave Clark 5, “The Hits,” debuted at No. 15, fueled by TV advertising and the fact that the DC5 catalog has only once before been available, and then only briefly, on CD. “Memory and Humanity,” the fourth studio album by Welsh rock band Funeral For A Friend and first for their own label Join Us, came in at No. 17. American singer/songwriter Ray Lamontagne’s “Gossip In The Grain” (14th Floor/Warner Music) made a No .23 start.
Pink’s continued run at the top of the singles chart kept her ahead of “The Winner’s Song” (Polydor) by comedian Peter Kay in the character of Geraldine, which debuted at No. 2. The song, written by Kay with Take That’s Gary Barlow, was featured in the comic’s affectionate spoof of reality and talent TV shows, broadcast Oct. 12 by Channel 4 and rejoicing in the title “Peter Kay’s Britain’s Got the Pop Factor …and Possibly a New Celebrity Jesus Christ Soapstar Superstar Strictly on Ice.”
Leon Jackson, himself a former winner of “The X Factor,” one of the shows Kay was parodying, arrived next to him at No. 3 with “Don’t Call This Love” (Syco Music/Sony). Five-girl Fascination/Polydor pop band the Saturdays debuted at No. 5 with “Up,” while Snow Patrol’s “Take Back The City” (Fiction/Polydor) climbed 15-6. German crossover dance team Sash! debuted at No. 9 with “Raindrops (Encore Une Fois)” (Hard2Beat), featuring Stunt. The track is a remake of Sash!’s 1997 single “Encore Une Fois” which reached No. 2 in the U.K.
Katy Perry’s “Hot N Cold” (Virgin/EMI) climbed 63-26 on the new singles chart as its predecessor “I Kissed a Girl” scored a tenth week at No.1 on Billboard’s Eurochart Hot 100 Singles. Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” (Vertigo/Universal) is in a fifth week atop European Top 100 Albums.
