On his early 2014 album Girl, Pharrell chose his guest stars carefully. Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys were all there, forming a small choir of voices who weren’t the dude singing “Happy.”
But Pharrell and the buddies he tends to simply call “the Robots” have too strong a bond for cameos. They’re true collaborators. You’ve got the world-dominating “Get Lucky” and the also-awesome “Lose Yourself to Dance,” on Daft Punk 2013 album Random Access Memories, of course. You’ve also got “Gust of Wind,” Pharrell’s strong reteam with the Robots on Girl, a funk-plus-orchestra track that lands somewhere between .
And there’ll be a video to accompany the jam soon. Knowing Pharrell and his ambitious concepts for “Happy” (the 24-hour music video!) and “It Girl” (is it anime? is it a video game?!), the “Gust of Wind” clip should be something to look out for. Especially if there’s some kind of Stonehenge-meets-the-Robots thing going on.
