Before it hit the Internet, Pharrell exclusively premiered the new video for his single “It Girl” in a very public space — Sony’s billboard in Times Square.
“It Girl” is the final track on G I R L, the full-length Pharrell released in March to capitalize on the success of his No. 1 single “Happy.” Check out the video below:
G I R L is the singer/songwriter/producer’s first solo album since 2006. Like many of the songs on the record, “It Girl” channels the vintage disco sound that Pharrell helped Daft Punk achieve on their monster 2013 hit “Get Lucky.” The guitar chops smoothly and Pharrell pushes his voice as high as it will go, multi-tracking it for a lush feel.

It’s a fully animated video, channeling both early video game graphics and a touch of Japanese anime. It starts with rainbows and beaches, showing that Pharrell is still in his “Happy” mindset. Last summer, he told New York Magazine, “I needed color. Everybody else was like steel, minimal. I was like color, rainbow, many different versions of the rainbow. Rainbow, but tertiary colors, not primary. Rainbow, gingham print. Polka dot. Color, color, color.”
That’s as good of a description of this video as you will find.
