Moments after Gesaffelstein stunned Coachella crowds covered from hair to toe in shiny black metal, the dark industrial Frenchman dropped a new video for his Pharrell collaboration “Blast Off.” His vibe matches the live performance as he stands tall and mysterious between two synthesizers that glow in retro-future detail like something out of Tron: Legacy. In fact, a lot of the song and video will be reminiscent of Daft Punk for fans, and that’s not a bad thing.
Pharrell, for his part, poses and sings in an trippy, ’80s mirror scape. His mouth shines in its own metal gear, but the psychedelic bodies dancing and disappearing in a sea of white dots may be the coolest visual in the video.
Gesaffelstein’s live set at Coachella was a brilliant exploration of horrifically minimal noise over hip-hop rhythms. He opened his set with “Blast Off” and continued to weave the pop elements from his recent album Hyperion with a more ease than was heard on the LP. His worlds merged into one awe-inspiring hour. If you’re going to Coachella weekend two, definitely don’t miss it — and even if you’re not, watch “Blast Off” with Pharrell below.
