Los Angeles-based pop quintet Phantom Planet will take to the road later this month for a five-week tour of the U.S., during which it will debut songs from its forthcoming self-titled album, due Jan. 6 on Epic Records.
The tour kicks off Oct. 22 with a two-night stand in L.A. Ben Lee will serve as the opening act for the shows. Joining Phantom Planet will be new drummer Jeff Conrad, who replaced actor Jason Schwartzman after his departure from the group last year.
Phantom Planet will also reissue its Daylight/Epic debut “The Guest” Nov. 4, with four previously unreleased tracks, new artwork and an enhanced segment with music videos. “It’s a way of saying thanks to those people who helped make ‘The Guest’ what it was,” says frontman Alex Greenwald in a statement.
A six-song DVD EP, “Live at the Troubadour,” arrives Nov. 18. Taped at the L.A. venue, the release features tracks such as “The Guest,” “Happy Ending,” “California” and the upcoming album’s first single, “Big Brat.” The group’s official Web site says the full show will be released on CD sometime this fall.
As for the new set, it was recorded in Fredonia, N.Y. with producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev). Spike Jonze has co-directed a video for “Big Brat.”
“The Guest” debuted at No. 3 on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart in March 2002 and has sold 153,000 copies in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
