Veteran club DJ and BBC Radio 1 presenter Pete Tong and Welsh opera singer Katherine Jenkins were among those named by the Queen to the New Year Honours list.
Tong was awarded an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire), while Jenkins is given an OBE (Order of the British Empire). Also, composer Sir Pete Maxwell Davies adds to his existing Knighthood and CBE with a Companion Of Honour.
The Queen hands out the accolades to individuals each year to reward excellence across the various sectors of British culture.
On receiving his accolade on Tuesday, Tong wrote on his Facebook page: “I’m very proud to be awarded an MBE for services to Music & Broadcasting, I’d like to thank everyone who has supported Dance and Electronic music over the past 2 decades, Happy New Year and here’s to more great music and events in 2014!”
On the news of her award, Jenkins told her 294,000 Twitter followers: “Honoured. Overwhelmed. Humbled. Inspired to do more. Sharing this w/ our brave service men & women worldwide.”
The Queen handed out awards to 1,195 people this year. And for the first time since the annual list began in 1917, more women — 51% — were named than men.
