25-year-old Perttu Kurttila began his music career as a teenage drummer in multiple Finnish metal bands, performing songs with family-friendly, heartwarming titles such as “Dentist from Hell” and “World Ending Pestilence.” His love of rhythm morphed over time; he traded in his sticks for synths and mixers and transitioned into the world of electronic music, a process he describes as “rather slow and continuous.” The result? A number of viral remixes and his latest single “Waves,” a breezy, flute-heavy track perfect for sunbathing season.
The now mononymous Perttu tapped the talents of fellow Finn and childhood friend Alexandra, who he lovingly refers to as his “little sister from another mister.” Her distinct vocals blend with the percussion and flutes for a delightful song destined to conjure images of sand and seas.
Though Perttu’s new to the scene, his approach to electronic music is bound to make him stand out in an endless sea of Soundcloud producers. Perttu’s work is largely his own; he records a lot of his samples himself, crafting a totally unique sound and discovering inspiration in unexpected places, like the noises made by his pet parrot.
His next goal? “I want to be an artist — a performance artist,” he says. “I’m working on expanding the live aspect of my shows, and since I am no singer I will find other ways to make me unique on stage.”
