Rudy Perez and Joan Sebastian both received honors for songwriter of the year at the 12th annual El Premio ASCAP Awards, presented today (March 11) in San Juan, Puerto Rico. El Premio ASCAP honored the most-performed Latin songs of the year, based on Billboard’s 2003 charts.
Perez received his award for a host of pop tracks performed by multiple artists, including Jennifer Pena (“El Dolor de Tu Presencia”) and Jose Feliciano (“Lo Que Yo Tuve Contigo”). Several of the songs were co-written by Roberto Livi.
Sebastian, who recently won a Grammy for best regional Mexican album, received his award for tracks he wrote and performed, as well as “Hoy Empieza Mi Tristeza,” recorded last year by Grupo Montez De Durango.
Other awards included Latin song of the year for Ricky Martin’s “Tal Vez,” written by Franco de Vita and published by Warned Bros. Crop; hip-hop/rap/reggae song of the year, “Masucamba,” written and performed by Tego Calder
