Paul Simon recently visited the New York Auto Show with Fred Armisen to promote the musical icon’s new album Stranger to Stranger for an odd pseudo-sketch that raises as many questions as it answers.

In the clip, which debuted on Saturday Night Live‘s website, the duo sit down for an interview session and also took questions from the audience and Simon has a hard time explaining why he’s even there other than stating “there are so many cars.”
He does, however, find a couple musical tie-ins. First he explains, “I was sitting in the backseat of a car the first time I ever heard Elvis Presley,” before noting that a car is a good way to transport records — but then gets self-conscious about pushing his own record too hard.

Throughout, Simon’s comedic timing and tone is impressive, leaving the audience wondering whether or not he’s serious at all. At one point he notes his first car was a “used ’58 red Impala convertible with triple carburetors,” before stating it “burned to the ground unfortunately” and explaining it “caught fire when I was in it.” While we’re left wondering whether this is fact or fiction, it’s all laughable as the reply hardly seems to register with the person asking the question.
