A debut album is a big statement. You don’t want to rush the magic. Party Favor waited about five years to perfect his juice, and now, he gives fans a sophisticated 11-track collection to bounce ass to.
Layers peels back in ever-more cinematic bass rumbles. It’s theatrical with the trappin, and he’s not just paying lip service to the genre’s roots. He reached out and nabbed some of the biggest names in the trap music scene, from modern master A$AP Ferg to old-school icons Juicy J and Project Pat. He’s also got verses from Lil Baby and Rich the Kid, and some fly electronic collaborators, including GTA and graves.
There are some nods to his old twerk-off days and a lot of looking toward the future. Billboard Dance caught up with Party Favor to peel back the Layers of this boomin’ LP in a track-by-track breakdown. Read his words on the set’s 11 songs below.
This song is super special to me, because it’s one of the first records I made on the album, and I feel like it just sets the mood overall. It’s an homage to Rustie in a way. Big wall of sound.
“Reach for Me” with Graves
This was so fun to make, because I got to work with one of my favorite producers. I wanted something [that was] cinematic and emotional, while still being able to hang in the club.
“Wait a Minute” is just such a trip for me. I had produced a record for Ferg’s solo project, and he was super open to making something for mine. It was a really cool process, because I made the general idea of the whole song [and] beat at the same time he was writing lyrics. Getting Juicy on the hook was just the icing on the cake.
“Work It Out” (with GTA)
“Work It Out” was a collaboration that was going to happen. It was just a matter of time. There’s very few producers that have the body of work and talent that GTA does, and I was so stoked to finally make a record together. We had started multiple ideas in the past, but we finally got this one done. One of my favorite songs to play live too.
This record was kind of an homage to my sound when I first came on the scene; booty twerk music. Project Pat with OG Maco and whistles just gets the blood pumping. Almost completed getting the holy trinity of Three 6 on the album.
“Wasabi” (feat. Salvatore Ganacci)
This song was so fun to make, because It’s just mindless fun. I wanted to have a house record on the album, and as I started the song, it had this weirdness to it. I immediately thought of Salvatore and what he would add to the song if I brought him on. We were able to get together at my studio and finish up the record. This one is definitely an earworm.
“Be Ok” (feat. Ezi)
“Be Ok” is one of my favorite songs I’ve ever made. This track was also made with Graves, and we made it in person with Ezi who absolutely smashed this. She’s so incredible at writing. The vibes and message of the song really come across to the audience, and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it.
“Dreams” (feat. KingJet)
“Dreams” is also one of my favorite songs I have ever made, because it’s so different than anything I’ve ever done. I had worked with KingJet many times, but I really wanted to capture his energy with this song. To me, it’s the ultimate summer vibe anthem. I wanted it to sound like driving by the beach.
“Wave” (feat. Lil Baby & Rich The Kid)
This one was an adventure to get made, to say the least. Went through 10 different beat variations and 15 different rappers to get where we are. Recorded with Lil Baby almost a year and a half ago. Love the energy of this record, and getting Rich last minute to hop on was the icing on the cake.
“RBRBRB” (feat. Hex Cougar)
“RBRBRB” is such a bop. Worked with Hex Cougar on this one, and we pretty much made the entire thing in one session. That’s always a great sign, because it just flows naturally. This has been a staple of my set for a year now, and I can’t wait for it to finally be out.
“All of It”
This is the last song on the album and was a really unique experience for me. Almost all the sounds, melodies and harmonies in the song come from manipulating my voice in some way. I wanted the album to end on this euphoric positive high. Can’t wait to see the reaction to this one.
