The members of Pantera urged club promoters/owners to beef up security for artists in the wake of Christina Grimmie‘s murder this weekend. Citing the onstage 2004 murder of lead guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott by a fan at a Columbus, Ohio, gig during a show by his band Damageplan, the group posted a Facebook message juxtaposing pictures of Grimmie and Abbott.

“We are so sad and disappointed to hear that Christina Grimmie was gunned down the same way that Dimebag Darrell was,” they wrote. “After Dime’s murder, we all prayed that our industry (i.e. club owners & promoters) would do whatever they needed to do to protect artists from gun wielding fanatics. Sadly, that’s not the case and another rising star had to pay the consequences with her life. SOMETHING NEEDS TO CHANGE!”

The post was dedicated to Grimmie, Abbott and the three other people (Jeff Thompson, Erin Halk and Nathan Bray) killed alongside the speed metal star during the 2004 shooting at the Alrosa Villa club. Former Voice contestant Grimmie, 22, was gunned down by 27-year-old Kevin James Loibl — who was quickly tackled by Grimmie’s brother before shooting himself — on June 10 after opening for pop-rock band Before You Exit at the Plaza Live. She was signing autographs at a meet and greet after the show when Loibl shot her.
