Nominations for the 84th annual Academy Awards were announced on Tuesday morning (Jan. 24), and while “The Artist,” “The Descendants,” and “The Help” all got their expected due, this year’s music nominations were a bit more surprising.

This year’s Best Original Score nominees included two nods for the legendary John Williams, who was nominated for both “The Adventures of Tintin” and “War Horse,” which were both directed by Steven Spielberg. Other nominees included Golden Globe winner Ludovic Bource for “The Artist,” perennial winner Howard Shore for “Hugo,” and Alberto Iglesias for “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.”

Only two nominees were named this year for best original song: “Man or Muppet” by Flight of The Conchords‘ Bret McKenzie from “The Muppets,” and “Real in Rio” by Brazilian music legends Sergio Mendes and Carlinhos Brown with lyrics by Siedah Garrett. Artists that appeared on the original song shortlist released in December included Mary J. Blige, Chris Cornell and The National, but none of them made the final cut.
Winners will be decided at the 84th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 26. Billy Crystal will return as host of the ceremony.
